Lets Paddle!
Please join us for the annual Sea Kayak Georgia Skills Symposium, held on Tybee Island, Georgia. We invite you to come enjoy the Atlanic ocean and estuary venue that we treasure. We are pleased to offer British Canoe Union (BCU) courses and specialized skills training courses developed by Sea Kayak Georgia and some of the world’s leading kayakers. You may choose to follow the BCU courses and progression or you may follow the skills development courses or a bit of both. Our focus is to deliver world class training, assessment and paddlesport opportunity for all students attending. Courses are available for all skill levels and everyone is invited.

Courses are conducted from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm daily. Full day courses allow the student to immerse themselves in the skills progression each course offers. The coach comes to know the student’s strengths, weaknesses and goals, the student can get comfortable with the coach. We believe this promotes better learning opportunity with real long term success for the student.

Evening presentations are given by different coaches starting anywhere from 6 to 7:30 depending on the day’s activities. One evening we will have an oyster roast at Sea Kayak Georgia, you can sign up for the oysters at the time you register for the symposium. Dinner meetups and presentations allow students and coaches to get to know each other in a social setting.

Rolling with Dubside

Rolling for Euro bladers and Greenland stickers alike. Rolling is an essential skill in Greenland, the roll was taught first, as a survival tool. Rolling with your core and using the body’s natural ability to float is an integral part of the Greenlandic method of rolling. The focus is on technique and not power. Come explore a full range of techniques with the world renowned Dubside. You will develop increased confidence to remain in your kayak under even the most difficult conditions. Basic through advanced braces, rolls, and strokes will be offered each day. This extended day class will be tailored to match each participant’s goals, and is designed to accommodate all skill levels. This class is relevant for those with no roll, an inconsistent roll or those wishing to add as many rolls as possible to their repertoire. Take one class as it fits your schedule, or join in daily for a complete progression.

Strokes Progression Two Day Course
Wanting to refine your strokes and really get into the specifics of technique? Try this course to build upon forward, reverse, sweep by adding bow rudders, stern rudders and draw strokes. Tune up in this class and take your skills to the next level. This course is great for getting coach’s perspective before an assessment. Expect to delve into the technical aspects of your strokes.

Living on the Edge for Boat Control

Develop a new relationship with your boat. This course brings edging your kayak to the forefront: how to do it, when to do it, why to do it. Fun exercises help to get you comfortable and lead to better balance. Connect edging to the broader picture of excellent boat control. See how adding edging to your strokes changes everything. Get a broader picture of how your boat, body and the paddle work together on and in the water. Start adding dimension to your kayaking with this fun course.

Combinations and Stroke Blending Session

Challenge the skills you have by taking strokes refinement to the next level and connecting them with fluidity, grace and style. Combination skills to be developed on the water: cadence, balance, precision, flexibility, upper/lower body separation, paddle dexterity, intuitive movement, paddle angle and depth. This session is great fun, give your brain a workout learning subtleties of changing blade angle skills and perhaps practice a rescue or two as you try new combinations.

Exploration Series: Estuary

Have you been to the Symposium a number of times and not really been out of the Back River or beyond the Triangle? The Exploration Series Estuary is offered for those who have had enough intense training for the week and want to get on the water and practice, but also chill out. Join our noted expedition paddlers and local naturalists and explore the area taking some of the lesser travelled cuts and backwater passages. We’ll go down to the south end of Little Tybee for lunch and then paddle back through the estuary to one of the Back River landings. The Estuary series will stay in protected water combining skills refinement, natural history and the Tybee way of slowing down.

Incident Management & Rescue Scenarios Protected Water

What do you do when things start to go wrong and the domino effect is taking place? Learn how to handle situations when things are going less than perfect. We will work on scenarios that the students sort out during the day. The training will focus on role playing. Scenarios will take place in the tidal estuary. Tow systems are suggested. If you have been wanting to practice and learn new rescues this is the course. We’ll cover every self and assisted rescue out there and let everyone have a chance to practice.

Surf and Rough Water Course Descriptions

Sea Kayak Surf Progression Day 1 & 2 with Danny Mongno

Over the course of 2 days, we will SLOWY work our way into the surf zone and beyond. Often times the excitement, adrenaline and well deserved nervousness of the surf inhibits out ability to perform in our kayak, at the level we know we most certainly could, if on the quiet flat-water we usually paddle on. In this class we will start with core boat and body control, From then we will work our way into the surf zone and with time and confidence, onto surfing waves. Prerequisite for this class include, the stamina to paddle at a moderate pace for 6 miles, comfort in being rescued after a swim, a double bulkheaded, 14 minimum touring kayak, paddling clothing to withstand long immersion in the water and a helmet.

Intro to Surfing “Headgames”

Get rough water ready , let’s stretch out the mind and body with a day of skill refinement. Lets look at fine tuning braces, low brace turns, stern rudders, sprinting forward. Morning will build from body and boat timing to bracing and post lunch we will work on some rescues and take and easy journey through some bumpy water to see what is going on and how we feel. Roll not necessary. Must have a helmet.

Surf & Rough Water “2 Day Circuit”

Group communication is such a big part of growing your personal skills so in this new class we will maximize this by keeping the entire group, students and coaches, together for 2 days. Students should have strong beginner to mid range comfort and skills in rough water and the eagerness to work well with others. Skills will grow from launching and landing, group safety and rescues, to boat control in the surf zone all the way to surfing glassy waves and light leadership training. Must have helmet.

Sea Kayak Surfing I

An introduction to the skills needed to play safely in the surf, followed by a practice session in small waves. Included in this class, we cover how to take advantage of a following sea, setting up to land, riding the wave and the foam pile. Leaving the beach, stroke timing and basic tactics for dealing with on-coming waves are also covered. Must have helmet.

Sea Kayak Surfing II

Join this class if you have some rough water experience, but not much in the sea or breaking waves. Go beyond the basics and have your strokes, boat control and timing fine-tuned. You MUST have reliable roll to attend this course. Course will travel among breaks in the Triangle and possibly venture down the front of Little Tybee Island. Must have helmet.

Sea Kayak Surfing III

Join this class if you have experience in rough water, surf zone and you have a reliable roll in conditions. Here you can practice under coach supervision. Suitable for those who want to fine tune boat control and learn more about wave selection. Course will travel among breaks in the Triangle and down the front of Little Tybee Island. Must have helmet.

Sea Kayak Surfing & Rough Water Technique & Finesse Development

Join Dale Williams for this skills building course in surf and rough water. This class is not about looking for the biggest waves or the hardest water to handle. Spend the day in moderate surf and rough water developing and fine tuning already existing skills to gain finesse. Class is limited to 4 participants so please sign up early.

Dale’s classes are for those skilled paddlers with a reliable roll who are looking to fine tune higher level skills and enjoy the most challenging conditions.

Exploration Series: Ocean

Have you been to the Symposium a number of times and not really been out of the Back River or beyond the Triangle? We will launch from Inlet Avenue and paddle down the front of Little Tybee. We’ll have impromptu surf sessions along the way, stop to explore Little Tybee and then come back ocean way. We’ll get really close to Wassaw Island, home of the oldest Sea Turtle Nesting Project in the country. Suitable for intermediate paddlers and above with a roll. Must have helmet.

Rescues at Sea and Rough Water Incident Management
What do you do when things start to go wrong and the domino effect is taking place? Learn how to handle situations when things are going less than perfect. The training will focus on scenarios and role playing in rough water. Students should be at 3 Star Sea paddler and above and have a reliable roll. Must have helmet. Tow belts suggested. Prepare to get wet.

Rough Water Discovery
Develop the skill to keep your boat under control, read the water and navigate through rough patches. We will work on dealing with conditions beyond surfing. This experiential style course will be taken out in swell and waves so a reliable roll in conditions is required. The course will take place on the move through the Triangle and down the front of Little Tybee. Learn the fine points of how your kayak design behaves in rough water. Must have helmet.

The Triangle and Beyond

Advanced Rough Water Paddlers join us for this session in the famous Tybee Triangle. Well get in some surfing and manuevering in the Triangle and explore the whole seriers of breaks moving down the front of Little Tybee Island.

Must have excellent self rescue and assisted rescue ability, ability to take care of one’s self and to paddle up to eight to ten miles comfortably.

Sea Kayak Georgia announces a womens program called Sea Swans!  We invite you to join Marsha Henson, Eila Wilkinson and Cheri Perry for our first program:  Sea Swans Retreat, an all women’s water sports retreat set on Tybee Island and surrounding coastal area. The retreat is planned for a beautiful time of year when it is not so hot, the water is still warm and the island is less crowded.  We are calling on women with a sense of adventure that want to come together to help us begin this new phase in our history.

These courses for women are inclusive and immersive, where the group stays together in the same place, eats together, plays together, dialogues together for the duration of the event.

Our activities will include kayaking skills building to include strokes development, rolling and surf. If there is interest we can practice SUP yoga, mat yoga, canoeing, SUP exploration and SUP surf. Activities will be planned as we discuss the interests of the group and look at conditions.

Mornings will have meditation and yoga sessions, no experience necessary. Days will be spent honing our paddling skills. Evenings we will share meals and have a special interest program. We invite you to come with an open mind and join together with a group of women who are willing to let the plans be fluid from day to day progressing as we all develop as a group.

Sea Swans will become our women's retreat series offering programs throughout the year.  One of our future sessions plans is for an adventure on Ossabaw Island.  Our group will kayak to the the north end of Ossabaw and base in an historic structure.  We will explore the island with on island naturalist.  Kayaking, yoga, birding and painting in nature will be the emphasis of this retreat spring 2020.
